Disclaimer/Claimer: I do not own nor am I affiliated with Jericho or CBS or any of the other PTB in relation to the show (although if anybody has a Major Beck just kickin' around with nothing to do...send him my way!). No infringement is intended. I'm just taking the characters out to play, and will do my best to show them a very, VERY good time. ;)

A/N1: Words in red are Beck's thoughts as he's writing; not what was actually sent.

A/N2:  Once again, everything I know about the military I've learned from MASH and movies.  I apologize for any errors in advance.  :)

Heather -

You asked what it's like for us – here at the front. You asked if we're afraid. You asked how we keep going. You've told me that I can tell you the truth about what's happening to us here, that you want to help any way you can.

You're a good person, Heather, a hopeful and positive person, and I don't want to do anything (else) that could change that. You deserve my honesty, but you also deserve my protection – not just from the ASA and Constantino, but also from certain things you have no need to know. I'll share what I'm comfortable with telling you – but you have to promise not to press me for more, that when I say I can't or won't talk about it, you'll let it be.

I don't even know what to say – what to tell you. I never really told Georgette anything, and I certainly never told Abbey!

What's it like for us? It's boredom, and it's fear and it's the sudden rush of adrenaline so profound you feel like Superman even as you're praying you'll make it out alive. We're not always in the midst of battle; it might be easier if we were because then we're not waiting. Waiting and watching and wondering. When and where and how will the attack come? When and where and how will we attack?

In the midst of battle, it's blood and dust and smoke and noise – the noise of guns and bombs, people shouting and the screams of the wounded and dying.

Yes, we're afraid. We're afraid we'll die, that our comrades-in-arms will die. Most of all, though, we're afraid we'll fail. We'll fail at reaching our objective, fail at holding the line, fail at winning the battle, fail at winning the War. Fail at keeping them safe, all those people in our charge, who depend on us, who need us.

You asked how we do it, how we keep going.

It's our job. It's our duty. It's our honour. We have defections or soldiers who go AWOL every day – but we have more who are joining us. Most importantly, we believe the ASA is corrupt, and we have the power to do something about it. We have the power to protect those who can't protect themselves, to help those who are helpless, to bring about a better world.

That's what keeps me going.

I don't even know what to say – what to tell you. I never really told Georgette anything, and I certainly never told Abbey!

Does he even realize that he’s starting to think of her in the same way as he did his wife and daughter? Very revealing!

Wow! That was so well written. That may be one of the best descriptions I've heard of why honorable people fight wars.

*blush* Thank you! It may be wildly idealistic, but it's certainly why I hope honourable people fight wars. :D

(and my apologies for being over a month late in responding to feedback/comments. Things should be much better from now on.)

Another great set of letters (I've read 24, 25 and 26 in this batch) - once again, you build a great picture of the realities of being at war, and what people do and don't tell each other.

I loved Beck's reasons for continuing to fight in the letter to Jeff. All of them are true, and not just the last one, although I like the way you have Beck give precedence to that reason, as the one that matters most now.

Hope all the NaNo/Autumwrite efforts are going well, and look forward to seeing the next batch of letters!

Thank you (yes, over a month after the fact... *facepalm*).

Thank you again. No, the last reason isn't the only one - but I think it's the most immediate, in a way. And we sometimes find the tiniest things to cling to when we're having trouble (and boy, is this whole Jericho universe having trouble!! LOL).

My apologies for taking so long to respond to you; things should be much better from now on. :)
