Disclaimer/Claimer: I do not own nor am I affiliated with Jericho or CBS or any of the other PTB in relation to the show (although if anybody has a Major Beck just kickin' around with nothing to do...send him my way!). No infringement is intended. I'm just taking the characters out to play, and will do my best to show them a very, VERY good time. ;)

A/N1: Words in red are Beck's thoughts as he's writing; not what was actually sent.

A/N2:  Once again, everything I know about the military I've learned from MASH and movies.  I apologize for any errors in advance.  :)

Hawkins -

I don't like having secrets from my chain of command, but you're right - I'm not sure we have any choice. Sending couriers to Texas with messages for people in Jericho appears to be...problematic, at best, in terms of the messages getting through. According to Clark, no mail at all has arrived since August 20th. I, personally, haven't sent any letters around that time or after that date, and I'm lucky enough to still have a secure line to Clark, but I know others under my command have sent letters since that date and are disappointed that the messages haven't gone through.

The delay in delivering messages isn't critical now – strategically. While Clark is still under my command, which means that, technically, Jericho and New Bern are also still my responsibility, I have the utmost faith in Clark's ability to defend the territory, and I have the utmost faith that you, Jake and the Rangers are more than capable of defending the area.

No, my concern with the lack of reliable communication with the people left behind in Jericho – and other territories – is that it can become a morale issue for the troops. Many of my troops formed relationships with people in both Jericho and New Bern, and as I'm sure you know, it's the connection to the world left behind that helps the soldiers make it through.

Like I said, I don't like keeping secrets from my chain of command, but you're right – we can't rely on Texas to relay the letters in a timely fashion, and we also can't depend upon the existing telecommunications to continue to be reliable and secure during the War.

Your suggestion is dangerous, though - setting up a direct courier system between Jericho and our location wherever that may be. We've been able to push the ASA troops slightly back towards Santa Fé, but there's no guarantee we can hold the line. Of course, our goal is to complete our mission of securing New Mexico as soon as possible. Once we've successfully taken New Mexico (if we successfully take New Mexico), who knows where my orders will send me next?

While we can, though, the direct courier link would be beneficial.

I agree to the couriers, but I can't spare any troops to act as escorts and protect them. They'll have to be armed and able to protect themselves. They also need to be careful – they can currently travel through Texan-controlled territory to get to us, but that can change at a moment's notice. They also can't allow the letters they carry to fall into enemy hands – into anyone else's hands.

I'm willing to test it out; if it becomes too dangerous we'll have to reassess and come up with another plan.

This is so true. Good for Beck for realizing this. He’s showing his human side and he’s a better commander for it!

I bet he’s more willing than he was in the past to keep secrets from him command. He’s being very careful about who he places his faith in.
