Del -

During our last conversation before I left Patterson, you finally let your suspicions show. Not that I blame you after everything you've experienced and after everything Lucy has been through. You asked – demanded - why I've taken such an interest in Lucy, but we were interrupted before I had a chance to answer your questions.

I'm not sure what it is that touches me so much. Her extreme youth, her corresponding innocence; the fact that she's a victim of such horrendous acts and a victim through no fault of her own – like so many others, like my own daughter. No, I'm not looking at her as a substitute for my daughter, but like any child who comes into my territory, it makes me wonder – well, it makes me think about things I can't know and can't change. Maybe that's part of it. Maybe it's because of all the things I can't change; maybe it's because there are so many children I haven't been able to save, to protect, that Lucy has become a symbol for all of them.

But she's more than a symbol to me.

She's a little girl lost, brutalized and hurting, and I want to help. I want to help you and Bobby make a home for her where she'll be safe – where you'll all be safe – and I want to help her come back from wherever it is she's gone.

I understand your suspicions – and I respect them. There's nothing nefarious in my interest; nothing I will deliberately do to harm Lucy – or Bobby, or you.

I don't expect you to trust me without question - nowadays, trust is earned rather than given freely. I hope you'll learn to trust me in time.

Beck
