Heather -

First of all, I'm sorry you had to hear the details about Del from Gail, especially since Gail doesn't really know everything and I suspect she's not interested in hearing any explanations from me.

To answer your questions - yes, Del is a madam and yes, she's setting up a brothel here in Patterson. Well, a bar with a brothel as part of the premises. She's already found a building and she's been working on getting it fixed up and ready for business when she's not with Lucy in the med-tent.

Your anger and shock that I would allow Del to do this was crystal clear in your letter and I'm sure we'll be discussing it again when I'm in Jericho next week.

Don't think I made this decision without reservation – I have many. But we're also facing a growing problem of prostitution and all of the attendant issues associated with it, including a growing problem of violence against those women and men. These problems aren't going to go away any time soon and we don't have the resources to deal with the problem. While “legalizing” prostitution and establishing brothels isn't a permanent solution, I hope it will allow for a certain level of protection for these people that we can't provide now.

You're right – there's no money to be had. Payment is whatever is negotiated – labor, food, clothes, whatever else is needed or wanted. I don't like it, but it's not going to go away, and I can't deny that my troops are and will continue to be Del's biggest customers. Until we either become self-sustaining or we have stable and abundant supply chains this particular type of arrangements will continue.

I've made the conditions of her continued operation very clear to Del, particularly as it relates to the age of her prostitutes. Bobby and his friends will not be employees of hers – which she has agreed to without hesitation. But then, I've made it abundantly clear what the consequences will be if she violates the terms of our agreement.

I respect your opinions on the matter, and we won't be allowing any brothels to be set up in Jericho, New Bern or even Rogue River. But if you think prostitution isn't a problem in all of those places, then you're being willfully naïve.

I'm also not going to be changing my decision on this point (although I'm sure you'll do your best to get me to change my mind.)

Beck
