Ronnie -

When you're in Patterson next week, I'll introduce you to Lucy. You'll see she's everything I've told you about her.

I been trying to understand why – out of the roughly one hundred or more children who have joined our band of refugees – she's touched me so much. She's truly an innocent victim – but then, all the children are. She certainly doesn't remind me of my own child, except that they're both lost in their own ways and they're both girls. Sadly, Lucy is also not the first child I've seen traumatized in this way, and perhaps even more sadly, she won't be the last.

Maybe it's because of her reaction to men in uniform, which tells me that whoever brutalized her was obviously somebody – or several somebodies – wearing a military uniform of some kind. Which makes my stomach churn and my anger rise. It frightens me as well.

The only battalions I know survived the Second Attacks are my own and Rodriguez' – and I know Rodriguez. If somebody under his command did this, either Rodriguez is dead or the man (or men) who did this are. Rodriguez might have been fighting for the wrong side, but he's a good man, and he would never – never – tolerate this kind of behaviour by his troops.

I'm currently investigating the men under my command. Del told me the name of the town, and I know we didn't have any official patrols in that area. I'm asking around, though, to see if any recent refugees have come from there, and if any of my troops were there unofficially.

I'll be confirming this information with my captains in Jericho, New Bern and Rogue River.

But that's the next few weeks.

I'm looking forward to your visit to Patterson. We still don't have a town leader identified but that'll happen soon and then you'll be able to concentrate on Rogue River. I have to say, though, I've missed our midnight talks. Or midnight silences, depending on the day. It'll be good to see you.

Beck
