Heather -

Thanks for your offer to take the kitten into your home. She's become the camp pet, though, and her name ranges from “Brat” to “Hey!You!Getthehellouttathere”, or Hey!You, for short. She practically lives in the pocket on my left leg when I'm in camp, although her claws are needle-sharp and she's not afraid to use them when she wants out of the pocket.

Besides, Hey!You is proving to be useful even before she's old enough to keep the vermin down.

A group of refugees came into town three days ago – half-starved and too beaten down to be frightened. There's a little girl – a bit younger than Abbey – and according to Del, the leader of the group, they found her in a burnt out town in Louisiana ten days ago. This little girl is terrified of men, barely tolerates women, and is in an almost catatonic state – except she does – occasionally – respond when someone talks to her, although she refuses to speak.

They call the girl Lucy, but nobody knows her real name, and none of the guesses have gotten a response from her. Del says they chose Lucy because of a country-western song that had the line “Lucy's just a kid along for the ride” - and that's exactly what's happened here.

Hey!You deserted me for the first time last night; we found her tucked up on the bed in the med-tent with this little girl. Nobody will admit to bringing the kitten to Lucy so how Hey!You knew she was in need of comfort is anybody's guess.

Lucy and Hey!You have definitely bonded – although I've had to mostly watch from afar. The sight of me – more specifically my uniform – sends Lucy into hysterics if I get too close, especially if she's alone. She's better when Del or Bobby are with her – although she's much, much calmer if I wear my t-shirt when I try to approach her. She's still terrified of me, but not hysterical, unless I reach out to touch her.

Lucy is young, about six or seven – a sweet-faced, blue-eyed blonde. When I'm not accidentally driving her into hysterics, she looks at me with these clear eyes, and my heart breaks. The look in her eyes is much, much older than her years and there's a resignation there - like she's waiting for the next disaster to happen; waiting for me to hurt her, just like she'd been hurt before.

From what my medical staff tell me, she was brutally raped – which isn't a surprise, considering her reaction to any man in uniform who comes too close to her. The thought of somebody doing such a thing to a seven-year-old child makes my stomach churn (and makes me want to murder someone.)

Del and the rest of the group swear they weren't responsible for any harm to Lucy – and I believe them. Bobby – another member of their group, a boy about fourteen - found Lucy when they were scavenging through the town. For whatever reason, Lucy trusts Bobby implicitly, although it took hours for her to calm down once they dragged her out of the corner where she was hiding. They couldn't coax her out and they had to leave quickly. Louisiana, apparently, is overrun with road gangs. Del said Lucy was naked and covered in blood. They cleaned her up as much as she'd let them, and they wrapped her in a blanket until they could find some clothes for her. Nobody in the group had any clothes to spare. But it was to find help for Lucy that they decided to head to Patterson – or rather, Jericho Territory. Apparently, news of our little oasis of stability and safety is spreading.

Because of Lucy's reactions to the sight of uniforms, we've set up a spot in the med-tent that is surrounded by curtains so we can block the camp from her view. We've also begun explaining to her that she's in an army camp and there are hundreds of men in uniform outside the tent. We've assured her nobody will hurt her.

The first time we told her where she was, it...wasn't pretty. But she can't be in isolation forever. On the other hand, it means she understands what we say to her even if she doesn't react to us.

Oh, Heather - she's so lost – afraid – fragile. I look at her and I think of my own little girl lost – and my heart breaks.

Kenchy's due here in a couple of days; I've sent him a note asking him to bring a female doctor or nurse with him. I'm hoping Lucy will allow a woman to examine her more thoroughly than my med staff have been able to so far.

Hey!You has just returned to my tent, and is crying rather plaintively. I'm going to feed her and then I'll put on my t-shirt and carry her to Lucy. Hey!You will sleep where she will, but perhaps if I come bearing gifts, Lucy won't be so frightened of me.

I'm going to get this letter sealed and in the mailbag for the morning.

Take care, Heather.

Beck
